Pretoria – Jacaranda City

Short History Of Pretoria

Jacaranda trees in Pretoria

Pretoria was founded by Marthinus Pretorius and named after his father Andries Pretorius, a famous Voortrekker leader.
Pretoria became the capital of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republic (South African Republic) in 1860. This appointment of Pretoria as the capital in a way signalled the end of the Great Trek.
After the second Boer war, the two republics of the ZAR and the Free State were united in 1910 with the 2 British colonies of Natal and the Cape to form the Union of South Africa. Pretoria became the Administrative capital of the whole South Africa. After the independence from Britain in 1961 when South Africa became a Republic, Pretoria remained the administrative capital until today.
